The sand sculpture park is scheduled to open at the beginning of July

15. June, 2022.

The strong and intense rain significantly damaged the sand sculptures, damaging them, so it was decided to temporarily close the sand sculpture park. It should be noted that the June precipitation norm in Jelgava is 70 millimeters, but 58.2 millimeters of precipitation fell in Jelgava last day. The municipal institution "Kultūra" has contacted the sand artists, and they are preparing to restore the sculptures after Līgo, so that they can be seen by visitors again at the beginning of July.

Summer has started with very rainy weather. It also rained during the process of creating the sculptures, so unlike other years, they did not manage to dry properly. But the intense rainfall yesterday unfortunately seriously damaged them. About 80 percent of the sculptures have various damages, especially the small details, and the sculptures are not aesthetically pleasing at the moment," reveals Mintauts Bushkevics, head of the municipal institution "Kultūra".

The weather has always been a big challenge for creating any sculptures, but the organizers have experienced a lot and created solutions for various situations in the more than 16 years since sand sculptures have been created in Jelgava. Even now, "Kultūra" has already addressed the artists, inviting them to get involved in the restoration of the sculptures. "A lot of work has been invested, so we want the damaged sculptures to be restored and the visitors of Jelgava to enjoy sand art all the following summer.” says M.Buškevics, adding that the artists could start the work on restoring the sculptures after Ligo, but it largely depends on the weather, which is very changeable. "After the Ligo festival, the restoration of the sculptures will be started, and we hope that the sand park will be able to open its doors to visitors again at the beginning of July.” said M. Buškevics, adding that the opening of the park depends on how smoothly the restoration works will go.
