A new concept for the sand sculpture park in Jelgava this year
5. June, 2020.
Continuing the 14-year-old tradition and adapting to the situation, a sand sculpture park will be built in Jelgava, on the island of Pasta, this year as well. In the year of the city's 755th anniversary, we will honor the legends and greatest values of Jelgava's history - starting with the ancient reindeer hunters and ending with the band "Prāta Vētra", so beloved by all. The artistic concept of the park was created by sculptor Kārlis Īle, but artists from all over Latvia will participate in the creation of sand art works. At the moment, sand sculptures have been created on the Post Island, but the sculpture park will be open to visitors from June 20 until October.
Adapting to the emergency situation and restrictions set in the country and the world, the International Sand Sculpture Festival in Jelgava cannot host artists from all over the world this year. However, the organizers of the event have come up with a solution, so that once again the residents of Jelgava and city guests have the opportunity to look into the world of sand art throughout the summer.
From Hercoga Jēkaba to "Brainstorm"'
In the year of the city's 755th jubilee, the theme of the sand sculpture park has been chosen to be special - only about and around Jelgava, the city's greatest value and historical legends. Along with the unique situation and important theme, a new artistic concept was chosen for the creation of the park, which was created by one of the world's most titled and recognized sculptors, the leading force of the Latvian team of golden sculptors, Kārlis Īle.
The sketches of the sculptures cover various periods of events in Jelgava's history, starting with the ancient reindeer hunters, Zemgali settlements on the banks of the Lielupe River, the Order of the Sword Brothers, Duke Jēkab, the adventures of the world's most well-known adventurers, the first hot air balloon, motifs of the theater father Alunān up to the first sugar factory, the city's big coat of arms and all so the well-known Jelgavians, the group "Prāta Vētra".
Already from June 20, the city of Jelgava will be waiting for fans of sand art
At the end of May, the preparation and tamping of the technical foundations of the sculptures was started on the Post Island, so that the artists could start work on the creation of sculptures already on June 8. The sculpture park will be waiting for visitors starting from June 20. After the opening of the park, the artists, in parallel with the already created sculptures, will continue their work on supplementing it with new sculptural wonders, allowing every resident of Jelgava and city visitor to take a look at the process of creating sand art. The sculpture park will be open all summer until October.
In addition to the historical events not included in the sculptures, the park area will be supplemented with various informative tablets that will tell about the 755-year history and events of the city of Jelgava.
