Jelgava is a city of sculptures. Everyone knows it for its massive ice and sand sculpture festivals. There are more than 20 sculptural works made of various materials in the urban environment. On the other hand, since 2012 Jelgava has been hosting large-format ceramic fire sculpture plein airs. Today, the sculptures can be viewed in a specially designed walking park on the Pasta Island.
What is Fireclay?
Fireclay is a clay typical of Zemgale, mixed with finely crushed fired clay particles, thus creating a special heat-resistant material suitable for outdoor climatic conditions.
Burning fireclay sculptures
Once the sculptures have taken on the shapes created by the artists, they are fired at 1200 degrees heat, conjuring up a unique glow show.
